Chapter 11

“It is time for break, king,” Sveta said before I could ask. “Too much vork bad for everyone. Body needs recovery time.”

“Okay, thank you,” I said, and I gave her a grateful half-smile before I turned back to Rune. “Gather the scout team and security team. Ask Buckley or Flora if there’s somewhere we can meet.”

“Yes, your majesty,” Rune said, and he hurried away to get that done for me.

“Come inside with us,” I offered to the old witch. “I’ll have my staff show you your guest rooms for your stay.”

“Nyet.” Sveta shook her head. “I bring my home vith me.”

The old lady gestured back toward her flying mortar and pestle, and I wrangled my shocked eyebrows into submission before I could offend her.

“If you’re sure,” I said. “We’d be happy to offer accommodations.”

“Do not vorry about me, king,” Sveta said, and there was a bit of a chuckle in her voice. “I am big comfortable.”

“Alright,” I chuckled lightly.

We walked back around to the front of the house where Sveta had parked her strange flying transport. I was curious to see if she would climb right in and huddle up like a turtle in its shell, but to my surprise, the old witch leaned in and pulled out a small box.

Her gray hair flew all around her head with another brisk breeze, and she walked a few paces over to a nice flat area. She set the small box down, and I realized it was a small dollhouse with dark wooden siding and tiny little shingles. The strangest part was that it didn’t sit on a regular block foundation like I’d have expected. Sveta stood the dollhouse up on two small stalks that were most definitely chicken legs, and my mouth hung open with surprise.

“I set up here,” Sveta said.

She gave the dollhouse a little pat on the top, stepped away, and snapped her fingers three times before she headed up the front steps of Kiska House without a backward glance.

I, on the other hand, couldn’t drag my eyes away from her tiny house as it stretched and expanded like a hot air balloon being filled up with air. My lower jaw fell all the way to the ground as my eyes tried to bulge right out of my head.

“What the fuck?” I asked under my breath.

In the span of about ten seconds, her one-foot-tall dollhouse had stretched to stand twenty feet in the air. It continued to balance easily on two thin chicken legs that were now a foot in diameter around their scaly ankles. But the weirdest fucking part was that two beady eyes popped out between the upper windows and blinked at me.

I half-expected the house to squawk at me, and I shook my head with disbelief.

“Your majesty?” Firo chuckled with uncharacteristic humor. “The team is arriving.”

“Right…” I droned as my eyes continued to stare at the old witch’s weird-ass chicken house.

I turned away and started to walk up the front steps with Firo, but I couldn’t help taking one more glance over my shoulder to look at Sveta’s home.
